Chapter meetings, events and fundraisers provide opportunities for members to network as well as share and discuss best practices, mining regulations and programs to maintain a strong emphasis on health and safety among its members. Also important are the contributions made by members, member sponsors and vendors which are key in supporting the SSC’s scholarship program.

Spring Thaw Meeting – 2025

The Annual Spring Thaw Meeting was held at the Flint Hills Technical College, Emporia, KS on 3/6/25. We would like to thank all those who participated and sponsored the event to make it a success. Presentations were given by Chris Searing of Buckley Powder regarding a successful project to lower a mine floor for installation of a new crusher. Nathan Steele and Jim Rombeck of Lyons Salt gave a very energetic presentation including required active participation of attendees on alternative training methods and success / importance of actively involving employees in the development and execution of annual refresher training. Curt Shipman of Hutchinson Community College Safety Academy presented and held open discussion on MSHA’s Sub Part U Surface Mobile Equipment Safety Program and Silica Rule (Part 60) requirements. Humberto Jimenez of the Wolf Clayton Group gave a very insightful presentation regarding the challenges of bi-lingual training for both trainer and trainees. Presentation included reviewing pros and cons of available resources and tools to aid in providing bi-lingual training. Jim Barta, Hutchinson Salt and SSC VP presented awards for outstanding Safety achievement to members of which there were many impressive achievements. DXP Safety, Destinie Dyer exhibited trending safety equipment.
